Delaware Online TV is a great place to find information and encouragement about prescription drug abuse. These videos from December 2011 are just a couple of the many videos that relate to this topic, and you can find info on a number of other topics as well.
A former nurse tells about how she used to sneak into a doctor’s office and hide under the desk, searching for the prescription pads. She got away with it for two years before being caught writing false prescriptions.
A young woman told about how she became addicted to Xanax, which was prescribed to her by her doctor. Several people discussed the fact that doctors are often too freely giving out prescriptions just because a person comes in and says he is in pain. A woman went to her doctor and said that her back hurt from a car accident, and immediately she was given 40 Percocet pills – which the speaker mentioned were a lot less expensive than buying heroin.
Angelia Negron, who is only 21, talks about her Xanax prescription and what it led to. She told about how anyone can get addicted because “you don’t feel anything” and that’s how we want to feel – just feeling good. She described how she would shake and sweat when she tried to go off of them. She felt that, “I had to have it” and she was on cocaine as well by then. She began stealing so that she could buy the drugs that she needed, and she wouldn’t even remember what she had done the day before.
Angelia hopes to help others to kick the habit just as she has been helped. She states that “the feeling of not being high and not having to have it is so great – there is so much out there to do – it’s breathtaking.” She also commented that people who are addicted have to want to be helped or else it does not work.
