State Tobacco Training Online

You can now get a certificate of completion for employees by having them take the tobacco training for the State of Delaware online. The program, available at www.detobaccotraining.com/ is free for Delaware residents and upon successful completion, a certificate is issued that can be printed out and presented to employers.

Some employers will find it convenient to simply schedule the training at their location and run employees through while they are on the clock. This ensures that the material is covered and an employee is ready to handle tobacco sales.

Registration is by email and students are asked to identify the location where they will be selling tobacco products. The course covers types of tobacco that fall under the regulations, ways to spot fake ID’s and how to handle attempts to purchase tobacco illegally. It also covers the fines and penalties someone who sells illegally will face.

In Delaware, the fine for sale or delivery of tobacco products to a minor, or for providing samples or coupons to a minor, is $250 for the first offense, $500 for a second offense and $1,000 for a third or subsequent offense. A second or subsequent offense is one that occurs within 12 months of a previous offense. There are also fines for not posting proper signage ($100) and for allowing access to tobacco products directly to customers – we require all tobacco to be under store employee control. Vending machines are only allowed in premises where everyone under 18 is excluded, such as a bar.

Our law makes it mandatory to ask for identification for anyone under 27 years of age who wishes to purchase tobacco. It is against the law to sell to anyone who will be reselling or giving the tobacco to a minor, and a note from an adult is not sufficient to sell to someone under 18.

The course also goes over some of the harms caused by smoking addiction, including health consequences.
